Green Spaces in The Vale

You will remember that early in 2020 GGERA volunteers planted a variety of spring bulbs in the green spaces on The Vale, thanks to the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association. The aim was to create a corridor of wild flowers which will look colourful and smell divine AND will entice butterflies and bees to come and make their home here too.

You may also remember that UK Power Networks dug up all our planting efforts a few months later.

We have some good news at last: Thanks to Maureen Byrne’s persistence one of the executives of the company has now promised compensation AND will himself assist with the replanting.

And while we’re on the subject …

Why not sow some wildflower seeds, which attract butterflies, bees and other pollinators, in your garden?

Pollination is important because it’s how plants reproduce and bear fruit. Over recent years, because of pesticides, our pollinators are dying and they desperately need the sustenance from wildflowers.

At the very least they are beautiful to look at.

Spring has Arrived!

We have previously mentioned that a variety of spring bulbs have been planted in the green spaces on The Vale and on the roundabout in Pennine Drive.

Now is the time to enjoy them!

We’re also pleased to see that the Council have recently cleared autumn leaves and cleaned gutters around the estate. Some new trees have also been planted.

Help Needed on Saturday Please!

Do you have an hour to spare tomorrow, Saturday between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm to help beautify our neighbourhood?

We have received a generous and kind donation of bulbs from the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association (narcissi, snowdrops and hyacinths).  Maureen and Rita have already planted some in The Vale.  We need to plant the remainder as soon as possible.

Pamela, a local resident and professional gardener, has kindly offered to lead a group of us in planting them on the roundabout in Pennine Drive. We hope that you’ll be able to join her, Lisa and Luisa in this fantastic endeavour.

If you have any gardening gloves, bulb planters or spades, please bring them along.

Spring Bulbs

Over the coming months a variety of spring bulbs will be planted in the green spaces on The Vale. This will attract bees and other pollinating insects, will look very pretty and will be low maintenance.

We’d like to thank Thomson and Morgan who are donating bulbs for this project and the Brent Cross South Community Fund for their donation.

Bulb Planting

The Metropolitan Public Gardens Association in association with Taylors Bulbs of Holbeach has donated 1,300 spring bulbs for us to plant in the Pennine Drive Roundabout – including Irises, Alliums, Hyacinths, Tulips and Daffodils.

Planting will take place at the same time as the litter pick-up.  So do come along to help with this.  Meet at the Ron Thomas Hall at 10:15 am, or come straight to the roundabout a little later.

Please bring any handy tools such as trowels and help produce a beautiful display for spring!
